In philology, a commentary is a linear explanation of a text that proceeds “line-by-line or even word-by-word,” an informational parallel text. For the sake of this study, it is interesting to note that commentaries are generally considered to utilize close reading, which is discussed both in Hayles and in this thesis (see 2.2).
